Our overview training is designed to provide a broad basic knowledge of Down syndrome and the impact this may have in the education environment. It is designed for staff working in the relevant settings and for parents to support their child at home.  The topics in this section are;

Promoting the development of pre-school children with Down syndrome (Birth to school age)

This training day reviews the learning strengths and areas of difficulty associated with having Down syndrome as well as the evidence to support successful interventions and learning techniques. It provides three in-depth workshop sessions; promoting speech, language and communication skills from the beginning; supporting cognitive development and encouraging play skills; and encouraging positive social skills and managing challenging behaviour.  The day provides practical ideas and activities to promote development both at home and in the pre-school setting.

Whole day training for primary or secondary schools

This training day includes a range of introductory sessions, geared towards staff who are new to working with a child with Down syndrome.  The sessions will cover the learning profile associated with having Down syndrome and a brief review of the evidence on the benefits of inclusion for children with Down syndrome. In the morning the literacy and numeracy skills of this population will be covered along with evidence based strategies and resources to support this development. In the afternoon we will look at using support staff effectively as well as developing social skills and positive behaviour.
